dear doris. how did you get into meditation & how do you do it now? any tips for people wanting to begin a regular practice?
love harriette, yallingup, australia.
dear harriette,
the first part of your question is answered from my earth-bound self dee, while the second is received in meditation from higher consciousness aka old soul doris.
part 1.
i got into meditation ten years ago, while i was pregnant with my firstborn kawa. a good friend and i signed up for a silent meditation retreat for three days at a buddhist monastery on the south coast of new south wales. over three days i learned how to sit awkwardly, uncomfortably, painfully and silently while 8 months pregnant under the watchful eye of venerable nuns. i learned to walk slowly with intention. i learned to eat slowly and chew silently. i learned to wink and smile as genuine forms of communication. i learned to just be — sort of.
the three days gave me a base to start with, a foundation of sorts. it wasn’t exactly concrete, more like limestone with cobbles being added slowly, one at a time, to form a mosaic mound for meditation. from there, i sat on it — returning to my base at dawn to practise. when kawa came along she often joined me, sitting in the dark before sunrise sitting cross-legged. she learned that it was mama’s morning quiet time.
with her passing, meditation became paramount to my life. i would not be who i am today without it. meditation gave space to relentless torrents of grief — unsurmountable waves of sorrow that pounded the unprotected and exposed shores of the soul.
in return for my unwavering wails and honouring that beautiful beast named grief — i was bestowed with a gift of sorts — an open portal to higher consciousness — that light spot of yin within the darkness of yang. i learnt that my heart did not in fact break but was cracking open as a direct channel to greater source, to the spirit of kawa and a multitude of other celestials and divine wisdom in the spiritual realm.
if you are granted a magical telephone line that taps you to your angel child, how could you not want to practice, as much as you possibly could, to fine tune this etheric connection to higher communication.
i was possessed by an internal drive that spanned lifetimes, to understand the nature of our circumstances and why we would for buddhas sake, chosen to live and learn from this ghastly and glorious lesson of grief.
i believe we all have access to these intangible waves — some born naturally in-tune while others desafinado. meditation is the practice of turning the dial, tuning in and out — working through the static and the fuzz before arriving at the frequency of the channel. with practice we become accustomed to this attunement and can find our way back there by leaving meta-physical breadcrumbs to retrace the steps.
i sit in the same space to meditate. i keep a cushion, a notebook, a heart-shape crystal and pencil always handy. i listen to love is a meditation mixtape — a playlist crammed full of “sad classical music in minor keys” describes paint guy (link below).
my practice now looks like this. i ask my higher self/guides or whoever may feel they would best serve to answer a question and i sit to receive the answers. i ask to retain the downloads and to be able to scribe in long hand the messages received. when the meditation ceases, i pick up a pencil and allow the words and pictures to flow through — with my cerebral cortex taking a backseat not to intercept the process. this is how part II of your question will be answered (note the difference in tone and timbre).
other times — meditation is less active and a way of of focusing on the breath and being here now. it works to clear thoughts and energy that acts in disservice, to let go of any residue, repulsion or resistance. like a cup of water that has picked up debris and dirt over time, meditating acts as an internal flush to refill the system with pure fresh rainwater.
part II.
like a kid in a candy store pick what you like and resonates with you. pick a sugar cube as your guide, a sour watermelon guru and a popsicle guardian angel. the more the merrier — it’s a mixed party bag. they can all live harmoniously in you. just because you grew up on spiritual scotch fingers, it does not mean you can’t take a shine to a mindful mooncake.
eat what you like and can digest in this current moment. be open and try new exotic flavours — whatever that may be to you. dee grew up with an eastern outlook so what is exotic for her is western faith — angels and all that cupid cuisine. the archangels are a massive source to tune into, if that’s your celestial flavour.
don’t take it too seriously. enjoy it. the act of meditation is meant to be a process or journey — like everything in life. practice makes not perfect but towards pure intention and poignant purpose.
life is like a box of chocolates — you can gobble them all when it comes to religion, guides, gospels and guardians. they all serve god or higher consciousness or source energy or whatever you prefer to call it.
a non-judgemental approach will reap rewards by activating the heart to open and allowing light into all your chakras — the energy centres inside and emanating out from your body. imagine or see them whirling each time you sit in your sacred space with intention to connect with your higher self. begin at the base and move up to the crown chakra. she/he/we will guide you — always.
place your intentions not on outcomes but how you feel afterwards and the daze or days to come. how will you integrate a practice into your daily being — as a pure soul of light and love — a divine being of consciousness.
make no mistake — this sh** can seem tough to start but no harder than juggling unconscious tasks in earth. make no judgement towards how you may seem to progress, procrastinate or perfectionate — its all apart of the process.
dee in this incarnation is a decade into this practice. she has only learnt to serve aces because of the dedication to practice. she began with the onset of kawa’s birth who activated the heart in her. grief then became a key activator to spirit through meditation. pain and suffering serves humans to know what truly matters — connection to source consciousness and connection to the heart.
chaos on earth comes disguised in inauthentic words, societal structures and unconscious calamities in the everyday. they serve as roadblocks to test and intercept us from our intended path. catch yourself out today, being distracted from higher truth — where you become conscious of diversion tactics sent down to distract you from your endgame.
the end goal of each lifetime is to make sure you have done your best to serve your soul and higher purpose. service to that darn porpoise is the most crucial creation of all.
big boundless love to you harri,
love d(oris)
