why do some peeps love tay-tay while others can't stand her? what makes the artist so polarising? love nay-nay & yay-yay
dear nay-nay & yay-yay
in this weeks newsletter we tap into spirit to understand the divide between taylor swifts lovers versus the habitual haters. in part I i share from my lens as casual listener and in part II we tune into my higher self doris to channel the divide and what tay tay represents as a soul on earth. kindly note that ‘god’ can be substituted for any venerable you prefer and ‘heaven’ for a vertical plane that resonates with you.
part I
my introduction to taylor swift came about a few years ago, with the song blank space covered by imagine dragons. the lead singer shares in the live recording — we’re gonna play a song by taylor swift — which is met by a collective groan in the audience. he continues — i really love the melodies in this song *laughter in the crowd* well, i’m serious. its good. from that catchy tune on — i agreed. i liked the melodies in a bunch of her songs.
for the most part, tay-tay didn’t enter my periphery or taste profile, just sporadically through my sole stream of water cooler news that is
. however this week it proved unavoidable as lady swift brought her pop thunder down under playing to over half a million fans, tickets selling out in minutes. in contrast via any news source, she was at the mercy of dissection and despise for diva-like dramatics.i pondered this polarisation with a friend who dropped by this week, fascinated by the divide and scale we have in our reverence or revolt for female pop cultural icons over the eras. what is underscoring the adoring fans and more interestingly — the haters. so this issue #justforfun i decided to sit in meditation to understand swift-ly from a higher perspective.
part II.
polarisation has existed since the beginning of time and divinity. it is essential to divide in order to understand opposing sides — the lightness of day vs. the darkness of night, the sun and the moon, light and shadow and everything in-between.
tay tay is a symbol of the fair maiden — the damsel in distress. she is the archetype that many women who are opposed to her being-ness and seeming indulgence in her rapunzel tower. yes, she is an upgraded version, writing her own tunes and producing them from her bell tower however she still cries distressed maiden — come hither and save me from this wretchedness of this tiny stone tower.
there is an element of depen-dance that rubs others, particularly women up the wrong way. her precociousness, her sweetness and her do-gooder prom-queen ways which are ad nauseam for many a educated or undereducated, hard-working wu-men who wish for this type, this archetype to be banished, done for, eradicated. however, the handmaiden — she exists.
and for those cast under her spells and innocent charm and wide set eyes, she is a symbol of love and divinity and hope. she is an angel in disguise — a very good one, hiding out in her earth-bound matrix as a diva pop star jet-setting around the globe performing catchy songs and not smoking bongs. she is the girl who is so easy to hate. anyone who grew up in the nineties is not having a bar of it. anyone who is y2k plus is fair game.
either you allow yourself to be cast into her uniquely saccharine world of love and sad songs, heartbreak, crushes, lushes and hushes or you don’t. it is a testament to the scale of polarity and if you sway any way to the extreme, much like anything in life — be it racism, sexism, elitism, any kind of -ism, there is tay-tay-ism. if you catch yourself short and stop — what is it that irks you so much and can create such a furore and vitriol within you, that you must attack her with expletives — a soul you don’t even know as a person but as a person-a.
the persona of taylor swift is one that aggravates the inner witch in us all. she is the fair maiden who was sparred her life, as she hammed it up for the crowds. while you burned at the stake, fighting and fending off injustice, she was innocent and never proven guilty — ever. she is the darling, the apple of her fathers eye, she is the popular girl cherished by men and women alike — and she is nice — which makes it harder to dislike sometimes. but her version of nice can be dismissed as fake, even if it is genuine.
the tay tay factor or scenario shows up every couple decades in pop culture. in australia we had kylie minogue, then delta goodrem — she was so good, she could spell it out in her name. it’s almost like, we are not ready for this level of good-ness in this world. we cannot tolerate how good and nice they can or truly be.
however perhaps it’s okay to dispel and dislike this brand of bland — this un-spicy wholesomeness but on the other hand, perhaps we could move into a place of forgiveness and allowing space for her, the fair maiden — to exist and to exert her gifts. she means no true harm however her naivete may make it seem otherwise.
can we see she is the little sister to the planet, here to spread joy and love and light by being exactly as she knows to be. she is freja, goddess of frivolity. she is queen margot. she is the french queen marie antoinette who ate who many cupcakes. there is a sweet joy and innocence that is to be honoured here on earth.
